Stress Management - Relief is Possible

November 18th, 2009

Stress is something just about everyone has in their lives. Stress can come from many different things, work, family or finances just to name a few. Being stressed can cause many health problems ranging from a common cold to a heart attack. Learning how to manage your stress is a key component in leading a healthy and happy life. Hypnosis can help you accomplish your goal in many ways.

You know how you feel when you are stressed out. Maybe your pulse races, maybe your chest feels tight or maybe you feel like you are carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. Many times stress can feel unmanageable and just this thought can add additional stress to your life and body. Hypnosis allows your mind and body to relax and regroup. Hypnosis can give you the tools to learn how to not only control stress while you are having a session, but also tools you can use everyday.

Maybe you feel stressed before a doctor’s appointment, taking a test or standing up in front of a large crowd. Maybe you feel stressed out by something more serious like family problems or financial difficulties. Whatever makes you stressed out is called a trigger. It is necessary to find out what your trigger is and address how to deal with it when confronted with one. Hypnosis will allow you to feel more in control and more relaxed when you are met with a trigger.

Behavior modification is unique as it helps with multiple issues instead of just one issue at a time. People show stress through different actions such as anger, aggression, anxiety, or helplessness. While learning to control the triggers of stress you can also learn how to control the response to stress.

Stress can show itself in other areas of your life such as your health. Stress can be the cause of many health related issues such as a lower immune system, heart attack, cancer, stomach problems and skin break outs. In some cases people turn to alcohol or drugs to help them cope. Many start to gain weight or lose weight, start to smoke or lose confidence in themselves. You will learn special techniques to help with all of the issues you want to address. Just knowing that behavior modification can help in so many areas should help you to relax even more.

In order to become hypnotized you have to know how to learn how to relax. Therefore during your first session you will notice an immediate reduction in stress simply from relaxing. Hypnosis is unique in that it works immediately and will be long lasting which will help you be successful in your stress management goal. You will notice your breathing and pulse rates will become lower as well as your blood pressure. Long term you will learn self hypnosis techniques that will allow you to relax on command.

Stress is something we all have to learn how to deal with. It is something which can affect our daily lives and relationships. There are many different approaches to stress management you must choose what is right for you, but before you so make sure you have all the pieces of the puzzle before you make your final decision.

Tobacco Helps you Relax?

November 13th, 2009

In my job, I’ve helped a lot of people quit smoking. And I’ve heard a lot of reasons why smoking is a good thing.

Smoking helps you think, relaxes you, de-stresses you, keeps you from getting upset at your family, tastes good with coffee, tastes really good after a meal. Basically, makes things “better” and makes you feel “better”.

You don’t believe these reasons. Not really. If you did, you wouldn’t also want to quit smoking. Right? Actually you CAN have it both ways. You can believe your reasons to smoke at the same time you don’t believe them. It is the difference between ‘knowing’ something and ‘feeling’ something.

A part of you MUST believe your reasons or you would have quit smoking by now. Now may be a good time to know there are no laws that say your reason to keep smoking has to make sense. They rarely do.

In fact, 99% of the reasons you continue can easily be proven incorrect. Maybe smoking keeps you from blowing up and yelling at your spouse because you’re mouth is full of smoke, or even better, you have to go outside to smoke.

Most of the time you KNOW the reason doesn’t make sense. That doesn’t change the craving though, does it? Just one more one more reason in your list of reasons to quit. A list that doesn’t have much chance against the well-rooted cravings to smoke.

It all comes down to two things. The belief that smoking will make you feel better and what you’re trying to feel better than. That’s it.

If you’re thirsty you crave something to drink. If you’re hungry you crave food. If you feel bad (tired, stressed, overwhelmed, angry, lonely, whatever…) you want to feel good. And, whatever your mind has been taught feels good, you will crave.

This feeling to do something is what you probably call a craving. Many smokers have more than one type of craving going on. The ‘after you wake up’ craving might feel different than the ‘after a meal’ craving. The same principles apply.

So, what are you supposed to do? I can write several pages talking about this (and I have, look for them) But, it all comes down to modifying the feeling, motivation and belief involved.

First, the bad feeling needs to be helped. If it’s about stress, get it managed, if it’s a difficult situation, do what you can to take care of it or get some help. If it’s a bad feeling you get that is beyond what the situation deserves, behavior modification might be what you need.

Second, you belief that smoking helps you feel good (it’s probably the innocent mistake that smoking equals being an adult, in control, strong, capable, etc…) In truth, a cigarette is a plant leaf and chemicals wrapped in paper. The good feeling you’re anticipating from smoking is created by your mind. YOU make yourself feel better when you smoke. So it only makes sense that you can make yourself feel good by doing something that is healthy. If, your mind believes it makes you feel good.

And that’s the bottom line. The bulk of the quit smoking issue is about behavior modification - changing the way you feel. That’s why the success rate of most prescription medication and nicotine replacement (like the patch and nicotine gum) alone is so low. The only current exception is Chantix and even Pfizer, the makers of Chantix, recommend behavior modification go along with the medication.

Smoking Bans Began in 1998

April 23rd, 2009

Smoking in restaurants, bars, and casinos is something which has long been a fixture in the food and entertainment industry. Often non-smokers avoided places which allowed smoking for both work and recreation. However in 1998 California became one of the first to pass a bill which outlawed smoking in casinos, bars, clubs and restaurants. In the last ten years, other states such as Arizona, Florida, New York and recently Oregon have followed California’s example. In 2001 Oregon law makers argued both sides of the law, however it was passed by a reasonable margin. The main reasons the bill passed was attributed to the need for a healthy work environment and a smoke free zone for consumers who did not smoke.

Smoking use to be allowed in the work place for many years. However throughout the 80’s and early 90’s law makers in Oregon again worked to create a healthy work place by banning smoking at indoor job sites. However at the time, this legislation did not include outlawing smoking in bars, restaurants, casinos or bowling alleys. As more and more research came out regarding the health issues with second hand smoke, this issue was brought into the light, however there was no change. In 2001 Oregon decided it was time to create an equal law which would include workers in restaurants and bars. The new law makes smoking in any work place such as casinos or bowling allies illegal for all by 2009.

Dining out is all about the experience. When people describe a positive dining experience, rarely do they describe it having a heavy cloud of smoke. In the past restaurant and bar owners offered both a non and smoking section. However after examining the filtration systems in restaurants, health officials reported increased chances of second hand smoke health problems. This was due largely to ventilation. Smoke can not be properly filtered out with ventilation. The only way to insure a healthy environment is to have smoking only outside. This has an appeal to non-smokers because not only can they dine and actually smell their dinners but they can also not worry about developing other health risks. For restaurant workers, they are able to also rest easy and know their work environment is not causing them cancer.

Some opponents to the bill felt it was taking away the right for an adult to choose what they do to their own bodies. However what they failed to see what by smoking in public places the smoker is taking away the right for a non-smoker to be healthy. In Oregon a compromise was made, smoking would be allowed outdoors. While this does not agree with everyone on each side of the issue, it is a fair compromise for bars and restaurants which have outdoor seating available.

Being exposed to second hand smoke exposes non-smokers to all the same risks as if they smoked. They can develop lung cancer, emphysema, and asthma. Some feel by working in places where smoking is allowed such as bingo halls or clubs, the employee is knowingly exposing themselves to smoke and the health risks same with those who bring business to those places. However, previous legislation promised a smoke free work environment for all, not simply for those who can work a better job.

Health and fair working conditions are something Oregon law makers truly believe in. Oregon is taking strong steps toward those who are noncompliant with the new bill. There are fines and other consequences for those found to be in violation of the new law. No one should have to make the choice between having health problems and not simply so they can get a job or eat out.
