Research shows Ways to Improve Brain Activity

May 6th, 2009

Two types of patients that were diagnosed with mild Alzheimer’s showed contrasting results when dealing with the patients brain size-patients with a high physical regimen had larger brains than the patients with that had low levels of activity.

The study was conducted by finding 121 subjects that were sixty years of age and higher and were monitored with a fitness test by treadmill and a brain scans that looked at the white matter, grey matter, and total volume of the brain. Of the 121 participants, 57 were diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer’s while the rest did not have dementia

“People with early Alzheimer’s disease who were less physically fit had four times more brain shrinkage when compared to normal older adults than those who were more physically fit, suggesting less brain shrinkage related to the Alzheimer’s disease process in those with higher fitness levels,” says study author Jeffrey M. Burns, MD, of the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City and member of the American Academy of Neurology.

The results remained the same regardless of age, gender, severity of dementia, physical activity and frailty. There was no relationship between higher fitness levels and brain changes in the group of people without dementia.

“People with early Alzheimer’s disease may be able to preserve their brain function for a longer period of time by exercising regularly and potentially reducing the amount of brain volume lost. Evidence shows decreasing brain volume is tied to poorer cognitive performance, so preserving more brain volume may translate into better cognitive performance,” Dr. Burns stated.

This is one of the first studies to explore the relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness and Alzheimer’s disease,” mentions Dr. Burns.

Dr. Burns goes on to say that people should be cautious when interpreting the study results because scientists only observed the standard measure of fitness at one point in time.

The study was funded by the National Institute on Aging, the University of Kansas Endowment Association, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Oppenheimer Foundation.

Tale of the South American Acai Fruit

April 18th, 2009

For thousands of years, the South American rain forest has been thought to contain many of medicines within plants and herbs that could remedy most ailments known today.

This story has always been thought of as a myth until now! Deep within the Amazon rain wilderness lies a berry that has been an Amazonian treasure for hundreds of years. The Acai fruit sheds many answers to the myths of old.

The Acai fruit (pronounced Ah-sigh-ee) has been cultivated by the indigenous people of the Amazon rain forest for centuries. It has proven to be a panacea for everything from the common cold to diabetes. New scientific discoveries even link this tiny berry to curing cancer.

The legend of the acai fruit has been spoken of for centuries amongst the indeginous people of the Amazon. Once upon a time there was a prosperous tribe that faced certain death due to an intense famine that had swept the region. Desperate for a solution, the tribal leader made a decree that all firstborn children were to be sacrificed.

After discovering that his own daughter was pregnant, the tribal leader was saddened that this declaration would affected his own family. He then forced his daughter to sacrifice her new born.

In his daughter’s despair, she locked herself in her room, refusing to eat or drink anything. One night, she heard what she interpreted to be her baby’s cries. She stumbled out of the house immediately and there, resting under a palm tree, appeared a vision of the baby she had lost.

The next day the tribe began to look for Laka where they finally discovered her lifeless body under the palm tree. In grief they looked up and discovered bundles of fruit berries in the palm tree, which they later named acai fruit

This single berry not only saved the tribe from hunger, but was instrumental in this tribe’s economic growth. The people of Belem — the state in Brazil where the Acai fruit is harvested — are said to be the descendants of this same tribe.

To this day the acai fruit has proven mighty as it is the export that has kept this tiny tribe afloat since its discovery
