A List Of Foods That Healthy Dogs Should Not Be Fed

March 8th, 2010

Dogs are known for their ability to eat just about anything their owners give to them- but that doesn’t mean that the food you give them can’t hurt them. There are some types of foods that can harm your canine either immediately or over the course of several days or weeks.

Even some raw vegetables can be bad for a dog. Garlic is an example of something that is natural but still very harmful when consumed for the dog. Garlic salt, garlic powder, and anything made with such ingredients should never be given to a dog. Otherwise the dog will face problems with anemia, where the red blood cells become under attack. Given the severity of the situation, even small amounts should be avoided.

Artificial sweeteners can sometimes cause harm to a dog. Xylitol is a great example that is in use in plenty of foods out on the market today. Xylitol in particular is able to cause liver failure when eaten in significant quantities. When you see a product labeled with artificial sweeteners, be sure to pay special attention for Xylitol.

Some dogs are able have dairy, while others will have digestive problems with any type of dairy products. You could try to use a small bit of dairy in the diet of your dog, and see if digestive problems result to determine if your dog has an aversion. In most cases you may find that your dog is fine with dairy, but if your dog has sudden diarrhea, it’s possible that there may be digestive problems.

One of the biggest wrongs that pet owners could engage in would be to give a dog caffeine or chocolate. Chocolate is known to have caffeine in it, and the caffeine can quickly cause nervous system problems and heart problems. Caffeine may also speed up the heart of the dog, which could cause a serious problem if the dog gets worked up and uses the extra energy to run around. No chocolate or caffeine at all should ever be given to a dog.

Dog diets are hard to balance, since every breed of dog can be different. Each individual dog will also have different likes, tastes, and personality. Focus on building a well-balanced diet instead of feeding a dog table scraps or solely “human food.” Otherwise the proteins and fats may be off balanced, and could lead to health issues later on.

In Conclusion

Dogs don’t have the ability to make proper eating decisions themselves- they will often eat anything in front of them, edible or not. Formulate a diet for your dog that corresponds with what your local veterinarian has mentioned as advice- and be sure to stick to the plan.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Mexican Spices

March 6th, 2010

The herbs and spices used in Mexican cuisine are what truly give you the Mexican flavor you are craving. Without these spices, Mexican food would be bland. These herbs and spices bring out the goodness that we have come to expect from Mexican cuisine. If you truly want to make Mexican food, it pays to know about the spices.

Probably the most well known seasoning in Mexico is chile powder. This is made by mixing many different chilies that have been dried and ground. Chilies are also used fresh or roasted. Chipotle is made from jalapeno peppers that have been smoked and dried. Ancho is made from a chile with a sweet, fruity flavor. Many commercial chile powders that are found at the store are made of a combination of chilies, salt, oregano, garlic, coriander, and cumin.

Epazote is used in bean dishes. This tall green herb is also known as Mexican tea. It adds flavor and helps relieve digestive issues that beans can cause. Epazote is potent, so only add a leaf or two to your dishes. Large quantities of epazote can be toxic.

Annatto seeds are used to color food and give it a distinct flavor. This spice is most often used in rice recipes or sauces. The seeds are soaked in water for at least an hour before using. They are usually crushed after soaking. Some recipes use the leftover water that the seeds were soaked in and other recipes use the seeds themselves. They are a common ingredient in marinades.

Cilantro is an herb that looks a lot like flat leaf parsley. In reality, they are the leaves of the coriander plant. Cilantro is always used fresh. The flavor is a bit pungent and it adds a nice tanginess to a recipe. It works well in salsas, rice, beans, moles, stews, and soups. Cilantro brightens up the flavor of many dishes.

Cumin is a spice made from the seeds of the cumin plant. They can be used whole or ground into a powder. Cumin is often used in conjunction with chile powder to create a balance in flavor. It is often used in soups, stews and other common dishes. Azafran is known as Mexican saffron, or safflower. This spice is used in very small amounts because it can be bitter. It causes the dish to develop a beautiful saffron like color and is often used in rice and seafood dishes.

If you study authentic Mexican food recipes you will see these spices used frequently, along with others such as thyme and oregano. In Mexico, they have a unique type of oregano that is earthier in flavor than Italian oregano. You can find this Mexican oregano in some herb catalogs. Unless you live in an area with a large Mexican population, it may be difficult to find it in local nurseries or grocery stores.

Familiarize yourself with the flavors of Mexico by studying the herbs and spices they commonly use in their cooking. You cannot get an authentic flavor without them. Make the most of your Mexican recipes by learning how to use these spices correctly. Your recipes will turn out much better once you understand the nuances of these seasonings.

Mexicans love chilies so much they even use them to flavor their candy and ice cream! Not everything Mexican is spicy though. You can use fresh chilies, dried chilies or even reconstitute dried chilies to make really good Mexican recipes which taste authentic and are bursting with the unmistakable flavor of Mexico.

Fast Diet - 3 Foods That May Be Making You Fat

February 4th, 2010

In this article we will discuss a fast diet and 3 general foods that can make you fat. By cutting out the 3 foods below, you will not only lose weight quickly and easily, but you will feel better and your body will work better too.

1. Sugar: Sugar has become a staple in most people’s diets. But sugar will make you fat and even using no calorie sweeteners can trick your body into craving sweet things. Sugar is really bad for your body and the climb in its intake has been extremely detrimental to the human race. In the 1800’s humans only consumed 1 teaspoon of sugar per year, today the average is 50 teaspoons per day.

Our bodies aren’t used to this and cannot handle this amount. The result of all of this sugar consumption is an epidemic of obesity, diabetes, allergies and even cancer. Start decreasing your sugar intake, cut out soda and no calorie sweeteners, you will start to lose weight quickly.

2. Wheat: Wheat is a very common hidden food allergy, especially in America where it has been genetically modified. Because many people’s bodies don’t handle the modified wheat, allergies have become very common. And surprisingly, many people are completely unaware that they have a problem with wheat. Some symptoms that can present themselves if you have problem with wheat are depression, anxiety, anger or even hay fever.

Depression is a huge problem these days, yet instead of treating the cause, doctors treat the symptoms with dangerous often body damaging drugs. Wheat is the first ingredient in most processed foods, stop eating junk food and you will lose weight.

3. Dairy: Many people have hidden dairy allergies as well, and this can alter moods and cause low energy levels. The hormones that animals are injected with make their ways into our systems when we ingest cheese and milk products, the result is catastrophic to our bodies.

Symptoms can be extremely subtle, like tiredness or a headache, so people don’t address the issues going on in their bodies until it is too late. Cut out dairy from your diet, add soy products or even organic dairy and you will not only feel better, but your waist line will decrease too.

This article discussed a fast diet that includes eliminating 3 general foods that can make you fat. Sugar, wheat and dairy can contribute to weight gain and or the plateau some people hit when dieting. Finding alternatives to these foods might seem difficult at first, but there are so many wonderful foods that can be eaten instead, you’ll see in a few weeks that you don’t even miss them.

The Downside Of Energy Drinks For Getting Toned Arms

November 27th, 2009

Energy drinks pack a powerful punch and they can help you get through the dieting lows when trying to get toned arms. However, chronic consumption of said drinks has its consequences.

Letting go of energy drinks can be hard. They are ultra convenient and all you have to do is drink a bottle and instant energy is yours.

But here is why you should think twice about taking energy drinks to help you get rid of arm flab:

1. Digestive lining degradation. Almost all energy drinks have one main ingredient in common: caffeine. And high amounts of caffeine can damage your digestive lining. It can also cause a lot of gastric distress.

2. Artificial masking of sleep debts. Just because you no longer feel the need to sleep, doesn’t mean that your body isn’t suffering the consequences. One consequence, is a reduction in the production of arm flab burning hormones.

3. Unconscious sleep sabotage. When you fall asleep, you’ll reawake at least 10 times. But the awakenings are so brief and light that you don’t remember any of them. Too much bottled energy during the day can increase said awakenings. The end result? Poorer sleep without you being aware of the cause.

4. Increased stress. Energy drinks stimulate your adrenal glands to release epinephrine, dopamine and norepinephrine. All of which give you a tremendous surge of energy. Over time, the constant bombarding of your adrenal system can accelerate aging.

5. Cellular dehydration. Caffeine does two things: it increases dehydration and it masks the effects of said dehydration. This is not a good combo for arm flab. After all, cellular hydration has a direct impact on recovery, fatigue, mental state and metabolism.

You are much better off sticking with loose leaf teas instead of energy drinks. However, you still have to be careful with abuse here. If some area in your daily routine is lacking, attack it before popping more caffeine. This will be a much better approach for losing that arm flab.

Why Are Mexican Recipes and American Recipes So Different?

November 10th, 2009

It should not be a surprise to anyone to hear that the neighboring countries of the United States and Mexico have different cuisines. Nor is it surprising to hear that Mexican food recipes and recipes for traditional American dishes are quite different. What is surprising is that they are different - quite often, countries which border each other have somewhat similar culinary traditions, such as is the case between the US and Canada. So why is it that our food is so different from Mexican food anyway?

Some Mexican Food History

There are two important reasons why Mexican food differs so greatly from the standard fare in the United States. One is historical. Unlike the United States, Mexico spent a much longer time as a Spanish colony than did the US. It is true that parts of the US were originally Spanish territories, though the Spanish colonial period lasted for a much briefer length of time here, with the influence of Spanish cuisine being pronounced mostly in regions, which were once Spanish territory, largely those bordering Mexico.

The US has a different history, being a former British colony with most of its early immigration coming from northern Europe and having different culinary traditions. This alone accounts for some of the divergence of Mexican and American cooking, since traditional Mexican recipes have a profound Spanish influence which is missing from most American cooking.

For a long time, however, immigrants to Mexico from the old world hailed, for the most part, from Spain, leaving an indelible stamp on the new nation’s cuisine. Many Mexican recipes are adaptations of Spanish dishes, with some classic recipes from Spain surviving more or less intact. This led to a distinctive blend of culinary traditions drawn from Spanish and indigenous ingredients and cooking methods.

Mexico has also seen a large number of immigrants arrive from the Levant (especially Syria and Lebanon), adding a few dishes which are now classic Mexican food recipes in their own right such as al pastor. This dish is essentially a Mexican take on the middle eastern shawarma.

Since the US has a much more diverse population, no single nationality’s cuisine ever assumed quite the dominance over American cooking as can be seen in Mexico with Spanish influence. The development of Mexican food is largely the product of two cuisines rather than many melding together over time.

Different Ingredients

The other important factor behind the difference in the cuisines of the two countries is geographical. The Spanish had to adapt to the ingredients, which were available in Mexico, just like the pilgrims learned to cook the local produce in Massachusetts. In Mexico, ingredients like corn, chilies, avocados, pumpkins, tomatoes and others which were new to the conquistadores quickly became staples and were cooked along with old world ones like rice, coriander and olives.

It is this adaptation of European recipes to the ingredients of the new world and the incorporation of Spanish ingredients and techniques into the indigenous cuisine that has made Mexican food the unique cuisine it is today. From Mexican food recipes like pozole to Mexican casserole recipes, tostadas to pumpkin recipes, Mexican food is one of the world’s greatest fusion cuisines that no one thinks of as a fusion cuisine.

Traditional Mexican meals are not difficult to make and you can buy ready roasted peppers and other such ingredients to speed up the cooking process. If you are interested in making dried chilies or canning roasted peppers yourself, these are simple to do as well and they will taste unique and homemade.

Why You Need A Detox Program

September 11th, 2009

When I started having pains in an area next to my stomach, I had to go to the doctor and get help. Fortunately, it was not as bad. There were some difficulties with my liver, but not enough to require hospitalization. In fact, I was able to go back home the same night. I was on medication for a couple of weeks, and when I finished it, I was instructed to go through a detox program.

I must admit that I was not exactly thrilled about it, but having escaped surgery, I decided not to take any chances, so I followed the detox program to the letter.

The first days of the detox program were the hardest. I was particularly affected by the fact that I couldn’t eat red meat. I utilised to eat meat almost everyday, and having it taken away so suddenly was hard on me. Almost as bad was the prohibition of alcohol. More than once I was tempted to drink, but then I forced myself to remember the pain I had felt just a few weeks before and that somewhat assisted. I stopped hanging out with my friends for a bit, so as to reduce temptation.

On the other hand, having to do exercise was the most fun part of the whole detox program. At first it was problematic, but when I joined a group that played basketball, I in reality got into it. The first games I could not hold more than a quarter without having to call it quits. Nevertheless, I liked the competitive part of the sport and I kept trying harder and harder. Although I never became a great player, I started to look forward to each game, just for the fun of it. Today, I may outrun anyone else at the office, Although its not a skill that my boss particularly values.

One of the parts of the detox program that I had trouble complying with was getting enough sleep. Since the detox program did not include taking sick leave, I had to continue working and catch up with my tasks. And when I arrived home I Regularly felt like embarking to bed early was a waste of time that could have been employed on watching TV or reading or spending time with my children. Fortunately, my wife was very supportive and took care of the children while I got some extra sleep.

By the end of the detox program, I felt like a completely distinct person. In fact, I kept a good number of the habits that I picked up with the detox program, like playing basketball. Except now I play with my children on weekends only. I keep drinking water, and Although I began drinking and eating red meat again, the quantities I consume now are much more moderate than what I employed to consume in the past.

But most required, I feel better knowing that my liver is much less apt to fail and suffer a severe disease. I in point of fact recommend the experience to everyone who wants to feel excellent and live lengthier for the sake of his or her family.

Chinese medicine dates back thousands of years and today, remains a popular choice for all kinds of ailments to include acne. Unlike westernized medicine, the Chinese believe a person’s blood has heat and toxins that contribute to the development of acne.

For instance, have you ever noticed how acne seems to develop in the T zone on the face? The Chinese say this is because this zone is the same zone connecting to the small and large intestine, as well as the stomach. Therefore, acne shows up due to digestive problems, or exposure to chemicals.

How To Use Dairy Produce: Part 4 - Eggs (cont).

June 9th, 2009

Basic Preparation Of Foods: Dairy Produce.

Eggs: Part Two

Poaching: boil 40mm water in a frying pan; add a teaspoon of salt and a teaspoon of vinegar. Crack egg into cup, inspect and tip into water. Turn down the heat. Gather the white around the unbroken yolk with a spoon and simmer for 3-4 mins. Lift out with a fish slice, drain and serve on hot buttered toast.

Scrambling: beat the eggs well; add salt, pepper to taste and a dash of milk. Melt enough butter to cover the bottom of a small pan. Heat the eggs slowly, stirring constantly. Cook in a basin floating on boiling water, if preferred. Dish up when almost completely set, in about 5 minutes.

Fried Eggs: Melt enough fat to easily cover the bottom of (a|the frying pan. Tip the egg(s) in gently and gather the whites around the yolks. When the white has set, baste the yolk to taste and remove whole with a draining spoon.

Baking: lightly grease a fireproof dish and slide eggs into it. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and butter. Bake in a moderate oven and serve in the same pan after the whites have set.

Omelette: buy a pan and keep it solely for omelettes! The base should be smooth and clean. Allow two eggs per person; beat lightly and add salt and pepper to taste. Melt enough butter to cover the base of the frying pan. When the butter is hot, gently tip in the eggs; as it sets, raise up the handle and draw the set mixture up towards the handle, allowing the liquid egg to run down onto the hot pan. When all the liquid is set, tilt the pan forward and roll the omelette over. Serve immediately on a hot plate. It can be filled with almost anything, before being rolled over.

Pouring Custard: beat 2-3 eggs for every one pint of milk lightly. Heat the milk and pour gradually over the eggs; add sugar and flavouring to taste; cook in a double pan or jug and hot water until the required consistency has been reached. If it is not to be served immediately, pour a thin layer of water onto it to prevent a skin forming.

Baked Custard: proceed as above and then pour the custard into a greased dish; sprinkle lightly with nutmeg and place dish in water to halfway up its sides. Bake at 350 F for 35-45 mins; test its solidity by inserting a knife - it should be clean on removal.

Steamed Custard: proceed as for above, but cook in a steamer or a pan in boiling water. The length of cooking time is about the same too.

Custard Tarts: pour a little pouring custard into each unbaked pastry case and bake in the oven for around 40-50 minutes. A little strawberry jam can be placed at the bottom of the pastry case first, if preferred.
