5 Methods To Improve Your Vertical Jump

April 3rd, 2010

Many sportsmen wish to improve their jumping ability, but don’t wish to spend on costly programs, weights, or the non-effective special shoes. Although some of the workout programs available to provide good results, the same outcome can be accomplished at home employing a few straightforward exercises.

What you want : A jump rope, a chair, an open area to run and jump.

The Exercises

Armless Spring-Ups : Stand straight with your feet about a foot apart. Place both of your hands on your head with your elbows pointing each off to a different side. Using all the effort you have, crouch down a bit and spring into the air. Land with your knees a touch bent and as quickly as you can, bounce into the air once more. The secret’s to jump as high as you can each leap. Do 20 to 25, 3 or 4 times.

Squats : Stand with your feet shoulder distance apart. Taking a look at an object above eye level and maintaining a straight back, bend at your knees as if you were going to relax in a chair. Keep your heels on the floor. Make sure that you get your quads parallel to the ground, for full range of motion. Inhale as you descend. Stand up by extending your hips and knees until your legs are straight, and breathe out on your way up. For added results hold some dumbbells or a barbell of your choice.

Jumping Rope : This is self explanatory. Listening to music or watching TV while jumping rope can make jumping rope more pleasant, and jumping rope can provide you with fast heavy results. Try to build up the quantity of repetitions each day.

Power Step-Ups : Grab a chair, preferably an old one, but not one that may break. Place one foot on the front of the chair and use only that leg to jump up in to the air, swinging your arms and shoulders to get your highest jump. Land rigorously with the opposite foot on the chair and the foot you just jumped with on the ground. Do 20 or 25 repetitions, 2 or 3 sets.

Remember to Stretch : Stretching regularly is of similar importance as any of the exercises. Attempt to stretch all your muscles at least 3 times each day. This will make you more flexible, and an all-round better athlete. It’ll also make your muscles stronger and help them heal fast after a powerful day of leaping.

A Weight Loss Strategy For Teens

March 28th, 2010

No one has to read a study or a report to know that there are a lot of overweight or obese people in the USA and the UK. You can blame this on the food being sold or a lack of understanding, but the real bottom line is that you are the one who is putting that stuff into your mouth.

Most people do not think about it, but everyone has a choice whether to eat decent food or not. If you are seriously overweight, then you chose to allow yourself to get yourself into that state. No one else, you!

However, there is always a way out and it is never too late. There are thousands of weight loss programs, so you should be able to find one that suits you. I made that sound easy and it should be, but people still have trouble choosing one.

My advice is to read the weight loss advert aloud to yourself or a friend. Does it sound like BS? Then it probably is. Dump it. The bottom line is that you can only lose weight by expending more energy than you consume. Having said that there are a couple of ways of achieving that.

The two basic methods are either counting calories or counting carbohydrates, that is Weight Watchers or Atkins. Start by going to their web sites and reading about their philosophies. Choose the one that suits you and stick to it.

One note that I would like to stress here for teens is that at your time of life your body is going through a radical change. You are metamorphosing from a child to an adult and your body is filling up with hormones, you only had a little of before.

Let the change finish, before you start worrying too much. You were a bug, now you are a chrysalis and soon you will be a butterfly. Just wait and your body time to sort itself out.

There really is not much you can do to stop what your body has to do. Spots mean that you have poisons in you and your body wants to get rid of them. Help it by not putting any more junk into it. Keep your skin clean and make sure that everything that touches your skin is clean too. Hands, hair, pillow cases, et cetera.

Exercise! Now is the time to ingrain an exercise routine into your way of life. Exercise raises your rate of metabolism which helps you burn calories more quickly. If you can burn calories quickly, then you can allow yourself more treats.

The other point about exercise is that if you do not establish a discipline for exercise when you are young, then you will find it harder when you have your next bodily change in your forties or fifties.

The bottom line is not to worry too much about what you look like now, you are a chrysalis. Help your body out by eating healthily and take up a sport you enjoy and stick to it.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with lose weight fast and safe. If you have an interest in losing weight, too, please go over to our website now at Why Can’t I Lose Weight?

Enjoy Golf More with a Golf Club Set Tailored for Your Game

October 10th, 2009

When you are buying a golf club set there are several things that you need to take into account before you actually decided on your clubs. The last thing you want to do when buying a golf club set is to purchase the wrongs clubs. If you end up with clubs that are not suited specifically for your swing you can ruin your game quickly and it takes months to recover from this mistake.

The first thing to consider is what type of shaft you want to use. You can either choose between graphite or steel. While this is more of a preference, you should consider the shaft’s flex. When you buy a golf club set it’s important to understand what each piece of the club does so you don’t end up losing distance. Plus, you want to be down the center of the fairway and not look like an alligator going from one side to the other.

Then it’s time to figure out your swing speed. This should be done before you choose the flex in your shaft. Having this information ahead of time will allow you to get the perfect fit for your particular swing. Golf is a very complex sport, so getting all the technical stuff out of the way now, will lead to a better game on the course. For example, if the flex is too strong then you’ll have problems with distance if there isn’t enough torque.

There is the ladies flex, the senior flex, the regular flex, the stiff flex and the extra stiff flex. Once your flex is determined then you get to choose what type of club head and which brand of club you are going to get. There are lots of manufacturers to choose from when buying a golf club set, some of the more popular are TaylorMade, Callaway and Titleist.

When buying a golf club set, the brand is just a personal choice. So make your pick, but just remember to get the right loft or degree for each club. This will mean heading back to the professionals and get your swing tested so you can figure out where the impact of the ball is on each club. Getting the ball in the air correctly will bring your golfing game to a whole new level. Then of course one of your last decisions is choosing the grip.

The grip is very important as it helps you to hold the club correctly. It does not matter whether you hold the club with a strong grip or a weak grip any of the types of grips will work. It is just about having the correct thickness so that the club feels right in your hands. This is also the least expensive part of buying a golf club set.

If at all possible before you actually commit to buying a new golf club set, try out the configurations that you have decided on. Make sure when you are standing over the ball that it feels good to you and that it also looks good. It is important that you feel comfortable over the ball. Remember that most manufacturers will not allow you to try them out on the course first but many have indoor facilities to test them.

So when you are looking to enjoy golfing even more, consider buying a golf club set that is made especially for you. The set should have the correct shaft, the correct flex, a brand that you like with the correct loft and grip. These elements are very important when buying a golf club set because the correct set will help you take strokes off your game.

Plan Your Anglesey Coastal Path Adventure, Discover Sand, Sea and Woodlands

August 9th, 2009

The Anglesey Coastal Path offers the island visitor 125 miles of coastal paths with a variety of scenery from magical, sandy beaches, tidal estuaries, small seaside villages to tiny coves and inlets and offshore islands. And thats not all, you can also look forward to walking one of only five Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in Wales, enjoying tranquil, dramatic and beautiful land and sea views, as well as rich flora and fauna. The project is supported by European and Welsh Assembly funding and you are advised to plan ahead and try to complete one section at a time.

Many years ago Holyhead was a sleepy fishing village but today it is a major port linking the UK to Ireland, and the Anglesey Coastal Path leaves from the old Roman fort, which surrounds St Cybi’s Church, and makes for the country park. As you climb from Rocky Coast look back and see the dramatic panorama of Holyhead Bay with Skerries Rock lighthouse to the north and the Breakwater below you. You will then pass Holyhead Mountain, the highest point on Anglesey, taking in North and South Stack, before turning south along high cliffs to beaches at Porth Dafarch, Trearddur Bay and Rhoscolyn on Holy Island.

Leaving Four Mile Bridge southwards follow the Coastal Path almost parallel with the river as it flows strongly out of the inland sea to Cymyran estuary, passing sand banks where keen observers may notice various marine birds, while nearby is the edge of Anglesey Airport. Turning the corner at Cymyran brings you onto the first of many sandy beaches around Rhosneigr, exposed to the open sea and popular with surfers and sailors. Beyond the sandy stretches are a Neolithic burial chamber and a church in the sea at Porth Cwyfan.

Soak up the bucolic charm of meadows and woodlands as you walk from Aberffraw beach to Malltraeth, seeing St Cadwaladr’s church on your way. This contrasts with the Ffraw estuary to the west and the impressive sand dunes of Aberffraw. At Malltraeth see how the river Cefni flows under the impressive bridge towards the sea, and the causeway gives you the same view of marine birds that inspired wildlife artist Tunnicliffe. Newborough Forest is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and you may see a red squirrel as you make for Llanddwyn beach where Demi Moore filmed Half Light.

The Royal town of Beaumaris hosts the last Welsh castle built by Edward 1st, which is now a World Heritage Site. From here your aim is to reach Penmon Point at the eastern tip of Anglesey, and the coastal path walk takes you north eastwards along both narrow country lanes and the shoreline made up of small gravelly beaches. You will see the impressive former Augustinian Priory and Dovecote at Penmon before reaching the tidal coast with Trwyn Du lighthouse and Puffin Island nearby. Walking inland past Dinmor quarry you climb up to Arthur’s Table, which offers great coastal views, and then you descend to beautiful and vast Red Wharf Bay, passing woodlands on your right.

From the north east seaside village of Moelfre, famed for the heroism of its lifeboat crew, to Amlwch Port, the ancient copper town, on the north coast, the coastal path walker will experience a mixture of small, sandy beaches, sheltered inlets and rugged, rocky coastline. North of Moelfre is a memorial to the 1859 Royal Charter shipwreck, seen from the coastal path. From here you will hug the sandy beaches of Lligwy and Traeth Ora, and the estuary at Dulas. Then the rugged coast reaches Point Lynas, where the lighthouse, built in 1835, still operates, and this is a good place to look out for dolphins offshore, before you head west past Porth Eilian to Amlwch, a town with a rich industrial heritage.

This is just a small taste of what visitors to Anglesey can expect when they venture out along the coastline. You are advised to plan ahead and its a good idea to walk in a group and use cars to ferry walkers between two points, alternatively use the local bus service. You will enjoy the experience of walking the Anglesey Coastal Path, both for the rich historic record on offer and the wide variety of natural aesthetics, so much that you will want to come back for more.

Golfing for Novices: Part Three

April 26th, 2009

The term ‘the long game’ refers to your drives (shots off the tee) and fairway shots; that is every shot except the shots you make to actually get onto the green.

Because each hole has a different difficulty level, a different par and different hazards, advising you to use your driver every time on every tee would obviously be wrong.

This is something that you will need to learn over time as you learn the various shots you have to make depending on the club, the placement of the ball and your personal style of swing.

As a rule of thumb, the lower the number of the club, the longer and lower your ball will travel through the air. For example, a 4-iron will make the ball travel on a long and low trajectory and will most likely roll when it hits the ground, whereas a 9-iron will give the ball much more loft and it will go less distance both in the air and over the ground.

The professionals on television make it look so easy. They consistently hit the ball long and straight and never miss-hit the ball making it dribble ten feet or completely miss the ball altogether.

One of the most important parts of the game is the drive. If you spend a few hours at the driving range you will see quite a big improvement in your long-distance shots. Use the same club in this experiment to see what affect it has, if you move the ball backward or forward or in your stance. And, if you can, take a lesson or two from a pro, to learn the proper swing from the start.

You need to get to grips with ‘the long game’ as it will ensure that you get to the green in fewer strokes, which will keep your score level and frustration level down. Bear in mind that it takes a long time to learn to be consistent and also always remember: you’re supposed to be having a good time!

Basic Golfing Tips for Beginners: 2

March 30th, 2009

What to keep in your golf bag.

There are many types of golf bag out there. Some are practical, some are just beautiful and some are both! Then there different size bags. Again, some are large, some even larger and som so enormous that you could take all you need to go on holiday in it!

Generally speaking, you need a bag which is just large enough to hold your clubs, extra balls, your glove, tees, car keys, extra pencils, ball markers, a ball retriever, sunscreen, a windbreaker and a large umbrella.

It is also recommended that you carry in your bag: some tissue paper, sticking plasters and, whether necessary or not, some insect repellant.

A pack of baby-wipes comes in quite handy sometimes, especially if you’re feeling hot or you get sprayed with sand in the bunker - it can be just what you need!

Other things that could come in useful are certain drugs: for instance, antihistamine, if you are allergic to wasp stings or medication to counteract an illness like diabetes (if you suffer from it, that is). It is vital to remember to replace these medicines before their expiry date though.

You should also switch off your mobile phone before stowing it away in one of your golf bag’s side pockets to prevent it from upsetting other players. You have to be considerate to you fellow players and mobile phones on a golf course are considered a nuisance as they are in restaurants.

Having these items in your golf bag should provide everything you will need, even in a minor emergency (like a blister) or a major inconvenience, like a sudden rainstorm. Being prepared makes the game a great deal more fun.
