How To Dial In Your Intake Of Carbohydrates

July 11th, 2010

Carbohydrates are critical for fat loss and proper body functioning. If you simply eliminate them from your diet you will suffer some nasty consequences.

Now the biggest issue here is that many fitness hopefuls are clueless when it comes down to the fine print of proper carbohydrate intake.

So here are 6 ways to increase the effectiveness of your carbohydrate intake:

1. Never go below 40% of total intake: If your carbohydrate intake is less than 40% of your total calories, your performance will suffer. Even worse, you may burn through precious metabolism-boosting muscle. You see, carbohydrates, not protein, are what preserve muscle mass.

2. Have liquid carbs immediately after a resistance training session: And you don’t have much time here because the effect you are going to take advantage of disappears very quickly. Now keep in mind that you don’t have to take a supplement, you can make a shake with natural ingredients.

3. Avoid bingeing on whole grain sources: Way too many people are eating way too many whole grains. And for best results moderation is key here. In fact, your focus should be on legumes and beans, not whole grains. In terms of health and fitness, you are better off with the later.

4. Avoid bingeing on fruit: Fruit is another area of confusion for many people. You see, massive quantities of fruit are not healthy for you. Instead, focus the bulk of your fruit intake during breakfast and before training. During these time periods your body will benefit the most from fruit.

5. Combine your starchy carbs with vegetables: Vegetables are a very powerful tool for increasing energy while simultaneously slowing down digestion. So try to combine your starchy carbs with vegetables as much as possible.

6. Avoid night eating syndrome: Night eating syndrome can singlehandedly destroy all your efforts to get in shape. So make sure you don’t gorge on carbs right before going to bed. Even worse, don’t have carbs in the middle of the night.

Carbs are not your enemy despite what all the marketing may say. So just make sure you take action here for the best results possible!

6 Ways To Burn More Fat While Exercising

April 24th, 2010

Body fat is associated with the top 11 causes of death in the United States. Thus, losing body fat is not just about looks, it’s a matter of life and death.

So here are some tips to burn a little more body fat from your workouts:

1. Eat before exercising: Please do not buy into the whole working out on an empty stomach culture. Not only is this very painful, but it also reduces the caloric burn during your exercise and after your exercise. So, have a small snack before exercise for best results here.

2. Don’t sit: You need to do the majority of your exercises from the standing position. If you don’t, you will burn fewer and fewer calories. Even worse, using too many machines and sitting too much while exercising, reduces the real world application of your workouts.

3. Incorporate some balance training: Don’t make balance training the center of your workouts as most commercial fitness centers do. Instead, use it sparingly to activate a little more muscle mass while not compromising the hormonal output that heavy lifting creates.

4. Don’t abuse cardio: Ironically, too much cardio can reduce the amount of fat you burn because it can interfere with the intensity of your weight training. And weight training is the best way to boost your metabolism.

5. Use caffeine in small amounts: You want to use the smallest amount necessary for the biggest effect possible. And if you are a current caffeine addict, try to readjust your sensitivity by tapering off your intake. Then, slowly reintroduce your caffeine, but use the smallest amount necessary.

6. Rest less and less: If you slowly reduce rest periods as time goes on, you will notice increased fat loss. The key here is to make sure you do this slowly. Too much too soon will have you feeing miserable and out of breath.

There is no overnight method of fat burning unless you have surgery. So implement this techniques today and start noticing a slightly faster rate of fat loss.

How To Lose Flabby Upper Arms Without Touching A Dumbbell

January 1st, 2010

It is possible to lose flabby upper arms without having to step on a treadmill for hours on end. Is this statement really true? Absolutely.

They key is to practice the most effortless type of fat loss in existence. No, I’m not talking about surgery. I’m talking about spontaneous fat loss.

It’s the easiest because you don’t have to hop on the treadmill like the energizer bunny and you don’t have to starve yourself to death. In fact, all you have to do is make some adjustments here and there and the arm fat will go away.

So here are 4 awesome tips you should consider so that your flabby upper arms begin to melt away:

1. Buy foods with labels from not-so-cool places. Studies have shown restaurant goers will unconsciously eat up to 500 fewer calories at dinner if they are presented with wine that comes from an undesirable wine-producing area. You have to be creative here, but it’s worth it.

2. Try to only eat low GI carbs. The carbs with the absolute lowest GI are vegetables and legumes. The more of these you eat, the more arm fat you’ll lose. Obese teenage boys will eat 621 fewer calories in a single meal when eating low GI carbs. Low GI carbs are your best friends.

3. Eat a nice sized salad before the main course. If you have at least one and a half cups of roughage before the main course, you can expect to automatically eat 100 fewer calories. Studies have demonstrated this effect. Don’t drench your salad with high-calorie dressing, however.

4. Avoid saturated fat. But make sure to have unsaturated fat. When given olive oil instead of butter, people ate 200 fewer calories during their meal. In case you were wondering, olive oil is an unsaturated fat and butter is saturated.

With the above steps in mind, you can lose those flabby upper arms without breaking a sweat. There is a body of scientific evidence that backs this up. So make sure to act on this information now!

Having said that, you will get much faster results if you add in some exercise. Please do not get the wrong message, exercise is still a great tool for toning your arms!

Writer Katherine Crawford, a Harvard fitness expert and recent flabby arms sufferer, instructs women on how to tone flabby arms. Unearth how to get sexy and toned arms by exploring her blog about bingo wings now!

The Downside Of Energy Drinks For Getting Toned Arms

November 27th, 2009

Energy drinks pack a powerful punch and they can help you get through the dieting lows when trying to get toned arms. However, chronic consumption of said drinks has its consequences.

Letting go of energy drinks can be hard. They are ultra convenient and all you have to do is drink a bottle and instant energy is yours.

But here is why you should think twice about taking energy drinks to help you get rid of arm flab:

1. Digestive lining degradation. Almost all energy drinks have one main ingredient in common: caffeine. And high amounts of caffeine can damage your digestive lining. It can also cause a lot of gastric distress.

2. Artificial masking of sleep debts. Just because you no longer feel the need to sleep, doesn’t mean that your body isn’t suffering the consequences. One consequence, is a reduction in the production of arm flab burning hormones.

3. Unconscious sleep sabotage. When you fall asleep, you’ll reawake at least 10 times. But the awakenings are so brief and light that you don’t remember any of them. Too much bottled energy during the day can increase said awakenings. The end result? Poorer sleep without you being aware of the cause.

4. Increased stress. Energy drinks stimulate your adrenal glands to release epinephrine, dopamine and norepinephrine. All of which give you a tremendous surge of energy. Over time, the constant bombarding of your adrenal system can accelerate aging.

5. Cellular dehydration. Caffeine does two things: it increases dehydration and it masks the effects of said dehydration. This is not a good combo for arm flab. After all, cellular hydration has a direct impact on recovery, fatigue, mental state and metabolism.

You are much better off sticking with loose leaf teas instead of energy drinks. However, you still have to be careful with abuse here. If some area in your daily routine is lacking, attack it before popping more caffeine. This will be a much better approach for losing that arm flab.

Arm Exercises For Women - Unknown Myths

May 30th, 2009

Knowing how to do arm exercises for women the right way is important because it’s not easy to hide extra arm jiggle. If you have floppy arm flab, your clothing selection will be severely limited

Unfortunately, most women do not know how to get toned arms and all those sexy tops they have simply remain in the closet. But there is a way, and I am going to show you the way.

Well, I was in this “situation” for the majority of my life. But I had it bad, because sexy arms eluded me even as a twenty-something. And I spent countless hours doing every single workout program and spent countless money on everything under the sun.

You can learn from my mistakes and expertise. I don’t want you to waste all the time that I wasted. Here are some things to look out for when learning about arm exercises for women:

1. Spot reduction is impossible. Not necessarily. While it is true that you can’t force specific areas of your body to lose fat first, you can change how your arms look with minimal fat loss. Fat loss is only part of the equation and in some cases not necessary. The key is to firm up the muscle with very specific weight training, and to manipulate the amount of water and carbohydrate within it.

2. Push-ups are an excellent exercise for the back of the arm. Most of the push-up movement targets your chest, not your arms. Does it make sense to spend time doing an exercise that doesn’t tighten up your arms? Of course not! I cringe every time I hear an “expert” claiming that this is one of the best arm exercises for women.

3. Dips. If you do dips on a regular basis, a joint in your shoulder will eventually wear out. The only solution? Surgery and 9 months of rehab. Dips put your shoulder in a very compromising and unnatural position. Don’t do them regardless of what anyone says.

4. Kick-backs. These are ok if you want to momentarily fill your triceps with blood, but not ok if you want to tone your arms as quickly as possible. Because of the position your body is in when doing this exercise, it’s impossible to add a lot of weight to the movement without compromising your form. Without a lot of weight, you can’t tone your arms quickly.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation out there about arm exercises for women. Never has it been so confusing for women to get the right answers when they need them: now. But now you know what to look out for before starting your sexy arm workout program!

Here is Why Slow Weight Loss Is Permanent Weight Loss!

March 22nd, 2009

A common wrong step most people make is that of trying to lose a lot of weight at once. They think that fast weight loss is possible, thanks to the hyped and empty promises most fad diets make. However, the truth is that even if you are able to lose weight too fast, your body would put back all those ‘lost pounds’ on you as soon as you quit dieting. Remember that if your aim is to get rid of fat once and for all, you should lose weight slowly but steadily!

In fact, weight loss is not about following this or that fad; weight loss can be achieved only by making certain drastic changes in your lifestyle as well as committing yourself to following a healthy lifestyle for the rest of your life!

It is not possible to get rid of your old habits too fast, as it usually takes one at least 21 days to make or break a habit though! Start making small but significant changes in your lifestyle, and don’t stray! Over time you would be successful in replacing all your bad habits one by one with good and healthy habits. However it won’t happen in a day!

For example, most diets would either restrict your junk food intake severely or ask you to discard them altogether! However, if you have been eating junk foods for months, or worse, if those foods have formed integral parts of your diet, it won’t be easy for you to get rid of them so easily!

Once again you can start off by getting rid of one junk food at a time. Alternatively, you can make it a point to keep yourself away from junk foods except on certain ‘cheat days’ when you would be free to indulge yourself the way you want! As your taste buds become more and more accustomed to healthy and natural foods, you would lose your junk food cravings altogether!

The same technique of ’slow and steady weight loss’ applies to exercises too! If you have never exercised before, it is natural for you to panic in fear if someone says that you should run 10 miles per day or do weight lifting for hours in order to lose weight!

But how does the prospect of running only one mile or lifting weights for just five minutes per day sound? I am sure you would be able to cope that much. Over time, as your body grows accustomed to your new active lifestyle, you would be able to increase the intensity of these exercises easily!

To conclude, you needn’t be afraid of either dieting or exercising. Remember that while the journey of a thousand miles begins with one small step at a time, it is important for you to take that ONE step right NOW!

Exercising or Dieting - Which One Would Help You Achieve Fast Weight Loss?

March 21st, 2009

When it comes to weight loss almost all experts would unanimously agree that there is no better method to achieve your goal than following a diet. However, they don’t seem to be focusing much on the workouts! I am sure you have heard of several fad diets but do you ever get to hear the words ‘fad workouts’ or ‘fad exercises’? I haven’t heard of one in the past four years I spent in researching weight loss!

Remember that while dieting is important, building a strong muscular body is equally necessary, something which diets cannot offer you. In this article I will tell you how a strong body could help you burn more fat than what you are burning now!

In fact, a strong body is one which is built upon strong lean muscles groups. I am not sure if you already know about it, but the more muscles you have, the faster you are able to burn fat and lose weight. Plus muscles also make weight maintenance easy for you.

Here is an example. Most of the conventional dieting programs would restrict your carbohydrate intake to a very low level. With no carbs around, your body would burn your muscles for the purpose of energy production. The more muscles you lose, the more difficult you would find it to keep the fat way. Eventually your metabolic rate would be so low that you won’t be able to lose weight no matter how hard you diet!

However, this problem won’t occur if you have a muscular body. People with strong and well-built bodies usually find it easier to maintain their lost weight and keep the fat from returning when they start eating normally. This is because muscles help them burn fat even when they are not dieting! That is the advantage of building strong lean muscles. And only intense workouts could help you acquire lean muscle mass within a short period of time!

The other day I was advising a friend on how to start the workout regimen on a step-by-step basis. Here is some what I told him:

1. First off, there are two types of workouts: one which helps you lose weight by burning your fat deposits, and another which builds strong lean muscles for you! For optimal results, you would want to achieve both goals and as such, you shouldn’t focus on any one type of workout!

For the purpose of losing fat, you can start lifting light weights but make sure that you do some repetitions of this workout every day! The purpose of this exercise program is to boost your body’s metabolism to such a high level that you would be burning fat like crazy!

2. For the purpose of building a strong muscular body, chin-ups, ab crunches, squats and dead-lifts are pretty good. The purpose of these workouts is to make your body so strong that you could lift almost four or five times the amount of weight you are currently lifting!

But on a simpler level, the stronger your body is, the less difficult it would be for you to keep the pounds away! Plus you would feel a lot more energetic than before!

I would highly discourage you from doing long boring cardios as they do nothing except wasting your valuable time and energy!

Note that having a good meal is as important as doing the correct workouts! I recommend a protein-rich diet. Protein is available in foods such as eggs, lean chicken meat, etc. You can even take protein supplements if you want!

Along with protein, your body also needs fat, which you could get from nuts, fish oil, etc. In order to get rid of hunger, you should include raw vegetables and fruits in your diet as well since they are high on fiber and complex carbs.

At no point of time should you even think of eating junk foods, as they would ruin all your hard work!
